Battling Obesity for Sciatica’s Sake
Did you need one more reason to sign up for personal training this New Year? You are aware of obesity related health risks like diabetes and heart disease. But, did you know shedding excess weight could prevent sciatica, and the need for possible laser back surgery? It’s reassuring to know that minimally invasive procedures can help you get back on your feet, pain free, within a short period of time, but prevention is always the best starting point for spine health.
Medical researchers in Kawasaki, Japan found that obesity and age were linked to an increased likelihood of developing sciatica. The scientists tracked data from 3,194 workers over the course of a two-year period, about various attributes including low back pain, sciatica and ergonomic habits.
Of the 765 people who did not present with any low back pain symptoms at the start of the study, or during the preceding year, 18.4 percent developed new-onset sciatica at the two-year follow-up examination. Obesity, age, gender and mental workload were found to be associated with developing the condition. Obesity and work effort were strongly linked with new-onset sciatica, after allowing for age and gender. Physical therapy, pain management and laser back surgery procedures are typical treatment methods for pain and nerve impingement associated with sciatica.
This study, recently published in the journal Spine, should give you the motivation to shed excess pounds that may be weighing you down and increasing your risk for developing heart disease, diabetes and new-onset sciatica.
Individuals with a BMI (body mass index) of 30 or greater are considered to be obese, according to the government’s Centers for Disease Control. If you are reading this and already suffer with chronic back pain from sciatica, it may be time to learn more about how laser back surgery can help you treat your symptoms. Otherwise, if you have no spine issues and are otherwise healthy, what are you waiting for? Schedule that personal trainer, join the gym around the corner or start a daily walking regimen. Don’t delay dropping those dangerous excess Lbs.!
