Washington state lawmakers recently passed a bill to implement stricter rules for prescribing pain medication — including back pain. The new legislation follows a report from the Office of National Drug Control Policy that reveals pain medication prescriptions rose nearly 50 percent from 2000 to 2009. Of the 116 million Americans affected by chronic pain, 1.7 million live in Washington state, according to the American Pain Foundation. This represents about one-fourth of the state’s population, spurring the lawmakers action.

Downward dog, grasshopper and cobra may not sound like pain relievers, but they are just three yoga moves that can help temporarily relieve chronic back pain. A U.S. study published in Archives of Internal Medicine found that after 12 weeks, yoga helped relieve symptoms associated with back pain. The study also noted that stretching exercises were just as effective as yoga in alleviating chronic back pain.

Not surprisingly, many of the 116 million Americans affected by chronic pain — including back pain — take prescription medications hoping to find relief from their pain. The Office of National Drug Control Policy reports that prescriptions for the most common pain medications rose nearly 50 percent from 2000 to 2009. Even more alarming is the fact that dosage levels have jumped dramatically. The number of milligrams prescribed per person rose 400 percent from 1997 to 2007 — a growth trend that has sparked a dangerous side effect.
