Spinal Stenosis

Spinal Stenosis

Spinal stenosis is a medical condition characterized by a narrowing of the spine that pinches or otherwise irritates the spinal nerves. This condition may be treatable through minimally invasive techniques. A spine specialist at our spine center can provide more information about the mild procedure known as the AccuraScope™ D.N.D. procedure and help you determine whether this option might be best for you.

Symptoms and Causes

The symptoms of spinal stenosis vary, but typically involve pain or numbness in the extremities, as well as in the shoulders and back. An incontinent bowel and/or bladder is an occasional symptom of spinal stenosis. Such symptom is often seen in older adults who are suffering from osteoarthritis.

Treatment

Spinal surgery is generally considered a final resort for the treatment of spinal stenosis. Other less invasive methods are usually pursued and may include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, epidural injections, physical therapy, lifestyle modification or alternative treatments such as massage.

Should those alternatives fail to provide relief, surgical alternatives may have to be attempted in order to alleviate the symptoms of spinal stenosis. Four surgical procedures are typically considered:

  • Foraminotomy (removal of bone in the spinal foramin)
  • Discectomy (removal of some or all of an intervertebral disc)
  • Laminectomy (removal of bone near the spinal cord)
  • Spinal Fusion (fusing two or more vertebrae together)

If you suffer from spinal stenosis, the minimally invasive AccuraScope procedure may be able to resolve your back pain issues, while avoiding some of the risks associated with traditional spinal surgery. Read testimonials about spinal stenosis or contact us for a consultation at 877.474.BACK.
